Make-Up School Days Announced By Bradfourn Transylvania County schools will operate on three Saturdays and two weekdays which were previously scheduled to be vaca tion days, according to C. Wayne Bradburn, county superinten dent. These are the make-up days for those missed because of wea ther conditions earlier this year. The schedule of‘the make-up days is as follows: Saturday. February 10th; Saturday, Feb ruary 24th; Saturday, March 10th; Monday April 16th and Tuesday, April 17th. This action was taken at the meeting of the Board of Educa tion Monday night.' The Board also approved the appointment of Mrs. W. W. Brit tain to replace Tom Watson, teacher in the Brevard Senior high school. Other items of business in cluded the discussion of summer renovation program for all schools, the extended vocational program for the two high schools, and the citizens committee for better schools. Actually, the cut-over is scheduled for Saturday night, and the old directories will be obsolete after that time. Charles W. Pickelsimer, the I general manager, says that the Hat In The Ring Raymond Bennett Announces For House Of Representatives Raymond F. Bennett, who re cently retired as plant manager of the film division of the Olin Mathieson Chemical corporation, announces today that he will be a candidate for the House of Rep resentatives from Transylvania county in the Democratic pri mary this coming May. This is Mr. Bennett’s first ven ture into politics. However, he has been active in civic, political, economic, so cial and educational affairs of the community for many years. Currently, he is serving as chairman of the important board of trustees of the Transylvania Community hospital, and the long list of other posts he has •held in various organizations is impressive. BENNETT Citizens Telephone Company To Convert To New And Modern System Saturday Night Cut-Over First Step In Current Expansion •'It takes both additional switchboard capacity and ad ditional cables to provide new telephone service and more private telephone lines,” de clared Charles W. Pickelsimer, general manager of the Citi zens Telephone company. Tn .setting the date for begin ning the expanded telephone ser vice the company was faced with a problem of what to do first, whether to delay the cut-over from old to new until ali the needed cables had been installed or'.of beginning the new service now. and providing more lines and private numbers as swiftly as the needed new cables were in place. The company decided to make the cut-over first, and extend service to new lines and new private phones as rapidly as the necessary cables could he installed. A necessary step in this ar rangement involved a way to maintain full telephone service to persons on party lines while their lines are in process of change to private lines. To bring that about, without | interrupting service pending the I change, the company has provid ed the subscribers concerned with a code for reaching other subscribers on their party line. Each telephone on their particu lar party line has a separate dialing code. The company has furnished this code to the sub ’"scribers who are waiting to —Turn to Page Eight Business Office To Move Later The Citizens Telephone com pany will NOT move its busi ness office from Probart street to the new East Main street building next week. The second floor of the new build ing, where the new business office will be located, is not quite completed, a company of ficial said yesterday. Conse quently, collections will con tinue on Probart street for the time being. The building on Probart street will be sold or leased when it is finally vacated. ories Away Vew Numbers attractive new directories have already been mailed and should have been received by this time. Since there were a number of errors made in the new books, they will be reprinted in March. The books contain listings for both Brevard and Rosman, as well as a classified section. Previously, Brevard and Ros ! man have been listed together, but that is not the case in the new directories. (Times Staff Photo) Some 500Requests For Phone Service Will Be Filled Soon i Switchboard Has Double Capacity The new switchboard on the Citizens Telephone company has double the capacity of the board now being vacated in the cut over this Saturday. “There may be some conges tion immediately after the cut over”, said Charles W. Pickel simer, general manager of the company, “as it may take a little time to make observations and determine what lines are carry ing the heaviest volume of calls. When this is known the equip ment will be re-arranged so that the calls will flow through the switchboard smoothly. “It is impossible”, he continu ed, “to build a switchboard large enough to handle all the calls that rise like a flood whenever there is an unusual event, such as a snowfall which closes the schools and leaves hundreds of children at home with nothing to do but call their friends.” Marvin Whitmire Enters Race For Sheriff Marvin W. Whitmire today an nounces that he .will be a candi date for sheriff- on the Demo cratic ticket ih the May Primary. Mr. Whitmire owns and oper ates a dairy farm in the Dunn’s Rock section, and for the past eight years he has been chair man of the Transylvania county Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation committee. He is the son of Glad W. Whit mire and was born in Tran sylvania county. He attended the Transylvanii county schools and Brevard Higl —Turn to Page Eight The Citizens Telephone com pany has a back-log for tele phone service, accumulated over the last several years, ap proximating about 500 sepa rate requests, Charles W. Pick- j eisinier, vice president and general manager of the comp any explained yesterday. “Many persons in town and i country have been waiting for months for telephone service, rr.d for private lines,” he said. It was to meet these demands, end the expected needs of popu lation growth and business and industrial expansion in Brevard, Rosman, Transylvania county, and further, to bring the old and I out moded telephone equipment up to date and keep it that way, that the expansion program of the telephone system was under taken in 1957. A vast amount of planning, engineering, building, and out-j side plant construction has been j completed in the five interven ing years. The Citizens Telephone com pany now has an investment of about $1,500,009 embracing its old and new properties. This is in addition to the regularly scheduled performanc es Friday and Saturday nights, Feb. 16th and 17th, at 8:00 p.m., it was announced today by the Brevard Little Theatre president, Mel Everingham. The student councils of both the Brevard junior and Senior High schools and the Masquers, the dramatic club of Brevard College, are sponsoring the sale of tickets for this event, which is the first of several BLT ac tivities aimed to entertain and benefit the young adults of the community. The price of the tickets is fifty cents, with the sponsoring organizations receiving twenty five per cent of their ticket sales to further their own school pro jects. The new offices of the tele phone company, located next lo the Masonic Temple on East Main street, have not been completed yet, but when they are, an open house, to which the public will be invited, will be scheduled.
